This data was constructed using rggobi from the florentineFamilies
data in the Bioconductor package SNAData, by Denise Scholtens.
She took the data from Wasserman and Fause (1999) "Social Network
Analysis," but this particular data originates in John Padgett's
classic (and ongoing) study of Florentine families between 1282
and 1500. His first paper on the topic was published in 1993.
Wealth: Net wealth measured in 1427, in thousands of lira
NumberTies: number of business or marital ties in the total
network of 116 families
NumberPriorates: number of members of the Priorate, the governing
body of Florence
Business relationships are defined as recorded financial ties such as
loans, credits and joint partnerships.
Substantively, the data include families who were locked in a struggle
for political control of the city of Florence in around 1430. Two
factions were dominant in this struggle: one revolved around the
infamous Medicis, the other around the powerful Strozzis.
To the original data, we added edge weights equal to the average of
the 'NumberTies' of two connected families. Unfortunately, we can't
distinguish between business and marital ties in this data.
